For shipments of scrap carbide or high speed steel of less than 400 lbs—we recommend that you ship by US Priority Mail, in 50-60 lb increments, using the United States Post Office’s medium, 11 x 8.5 x 5.5, Flat Rate box.
The box can be picked up free of charge from your local post office: US Post Office Priority Mail Boxes. You need to use the medium box to get the $10.95 flat rate. We usually reimburse the $10.95 flat rate for each box shipped over 40 lbs net.
Although we do not reimburse for it, we recommend that you purchase the USPS insurance, the premium is only 1% of the value, e.g. $1000 for $10. Any loss during shipment is your responsibility.
Scrap carbide and/or HSS for recycling need to be separated from each other and be clean and free of foreign material.
Please refer to our SparkTest and HSS_Specs pages for more information on HSS.
Place the scrap carbide or HSS for recycling in “inside” packages, we prefer triple-bagged, heavy-duty, freezer zip-lock bags wrapped in packing tape (yes, we absolutely mean 3 bags thick).
Think of the inside containers as bowling balls on steroids. Stuff tightly crumpled newspaper between and around the inside containers so that they are absolutely as immobile as possible during shipment. Newspaper is cheap, please crumple a lot of it.
We also suggest labeling & numbering: "Very Heavy"; Box1 of X, Box2 of X, Box3 of X, etc.
Never use packing peanuts or ship loosely packed tungsten carbide—just thrown in the box, the good old scrap carbide will just break through. The whole idea is to stop the scrap carbide (or HSS) from moving at all. If you don't immobilize the carbide, your shipment just might wind up in our Rogues' Gallery, not a good thing.
The 50 lbs of scrap carbide double-bagged and taped—shown lower left—is thoroughly padded for shipment in the flat rate box.
We want everyone's shipment to arrive safe and sound. Sloppy packing loses valuable carbide and often delays delivery to us.
Immobility and firm cushioning to absorb an impact are the keys.
Tape the top
We use DOUBLED, industrial strength, 8-mil bags to ship all over the country. Flimsy sandwich bags and garbage bags do not work, No wooden boxes please, they break and do not give.
TOTALLY IMMOBILIZE THE INSIDE PACKAGES
We use crumpled, and very tightly stuffed newspaper below, around and on top of the “inside” container. This provides a firm crash cushion if the package is dropped.
TAPE ALL CORNERS AND EDGES
Because it is padded to the max, the box has to be reinforced with packing tape along all the open edges and corners, which are shown in yellow above.
TAPE 360º AROUND ALL 3 DIMENSIONS
After reinforcing the corners and edges, the box should be taped 360º around all 3 dimensions (red gray & green)
Please use clear, industrial strength packaging tape
(We just used duck tape because it takes a great picture :)
